On the Fridays of May 4 and May 11, 2018, US Federal Contractor Registration gave back by volunteering at The Kind Mouse charity in St. Petersburg, FL. In black t-shirts that read, “Always Be a Kind Mouse,” the team put together hand-packed bags of food for local, chronically hungry children. So what does this phrase mean?
Helping Children in Need
The charity was started by Gina Wilkens in 2012. At the time she was a self-employed and certified architectural draftsperson. When the Great Recession hit, she witnessed the true impact that it had on families. With a lack of work available, contractors were reluctantly confessing that they were struggling to feed their kids. These were hardworking and dedicated individuals who felt they had failed as providers, but it was the economy that failed them.
The charity comes from the nickname of “Mouse” that Gina’s father gave her when she was an infant. The Kind Mouse provides bags of food called “Mouse Nibbles” at four schools in St. Petersburg. These are meant to help feed chronically hungry children over the weekends.
Another service the charity provides is the Family Assistance Program. This is a 90-day program that offers food, housewares, pet food and career coaching those who have experienced career loss. One of the foundations of how the Kind Mouse operates is the nonprofit’s dedication towards privacy. The charity aims to not only feed but preserve the pride of families going through hardship.
Recently, the city of St. Petersburg has officially declared every May 10 as Kind Mouse Day. US Federal Contractor Registration is proud to have given a helping hand a great cause and wonderful organization.
